Scope of Practice
The term Postpartum Education & Care Professional, The Doula and The Postpartum Doula are used interchangeably.
Postpartum Education and Care Professionals are not medical professionals and do not give advice or diagnoses, interpret medical information or clinical results, or administer or prescribe any treatments.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals provide information based on scientific evidence, and referrals to relevant professionals and resources.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals provide practical, physical and emotional support to new families, with the principal client being the birthing or primary parent.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals respect the values of their clients, treat their clients with dignity and provide care that is non-judgmental.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals respect the privacy of their clients and keep all information gathered about clients in confidence, unless concerns about the safety of the client or a family member arise.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals understand and follow local laws and regulations, seeking appropriate clinical, legal or financial advice when relevant.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals promote communication between the client and their healthcare team.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals foster the client's self-determination, supporting the client to be informed and self-advocate.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals are professional and reliable, and if the agreed services can’t be performed, will provide reasonable alternatives or offer a refund.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals are committed to ongoing professional development and continually update their skills and knowledge.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals strive to increase community support for new families both at an individual level and by raising awareness in broader society.
● Postpartum Education and Care Professionals may have other qualifications and will make it clear that those are additional services that are not within the scope of this role.
